An oak for Gerry

CVR’s Class of 2026 planted an oak tree outside CVR on June 3 to honour Gerry McAdam, a classmate who would have graduated alongside them had he not passed away last year from cancer.

The tree-planting ceremony took place during lunch, and around 140 people – students of all grades and faculty – were present. Two students read a poem they wrote about Gerry; they explained that oak trees are symbols for strength, endurance, and wisdom, are native to the province, and are known for supporting over 500 species, all appropriate given Gerry’s passion for community. Another student then read a poem that Gerry had written in Grade 9, and they listened to a playlist of his favourite music.

The tribute was organized by CVR community development agent Lorelei Muller, the Student Leadership coordinators, and the administration team. The oak was donated by CRRC and Legault Électronique. A group of Grade 11 boys dug the hole, and dozens of people helped backfill it around the tree. The oak will help keep Gerry’s legacy alive at the school and be a reminder of his impact on the community. (CF)
