2025 marks the 75th anniversary of Boucherie Viau, a staple of Hemmingford. Danielle Viau is the granddaughter of the original owner and is now one of the business owners. She runs it with her husband and son, making four generations that have contributed to the butcher shop.
Viau explains that there has been constant growth at the shop since it was first opened. In the first few years, the family would deliver meat directly to the doors of customers. Eventually, they started selling in stores and stopped having to go door-to-door. When Viau took over, she and her brothers introduced new products like smoked meat, bacon, and ham. “Today we have 17 employees and we’re continuing distribution in the Montérégie and Montreal,” she says.
All of the products that they sell are 100 per cent made in Quebec. They are proud to be able to say that all of their meat comes from close to home. Viau reminds people that “If we want to have artisanal products, we need to support local producers,” adding, “It’s important for the region, so that we can celebrate the talent in the region.” Plus, having artisans that use local products is good for everyone. “We can’t forget the history we have. We have amazing artisans who make great products that are as natural as possible. It’s good for your health and good for the region,” she says.
To celebrate 75 years, the family has a few things in the works. For the anniversary, they brought back a special bacon that people are very excited about. They are also planning a couple of days this summer when food trucks will be available outside the store for the community to come have lunch. But mostly, they’re celebrating by continuing their work.

MNA Carole Mallette mentioned the anniversary in April, sharing details of the family’s history and highlighting the high quality of the products they offer. She made sure to shout out the hard work of the employees and wishes a long life to the shop.
For anyone thinking about starting their own business, Viau says, “Don’t be scared to jump into something. There are challenges with everything but it’s worth it to start. Don’t be scared to follow your dreams.” She reminds people that things don’t happen overnight. Boucherie Viau was the product of hard work, and small improvements and additions over the years that lead to where they are today. She also encourages people to build community with those they work with and other businesses. Not everything is a competition, and it’s important to lift each other up so everyone can succeed.
