Ciné-Cinéma, Huntingdon’s Film Club, will be resuming its programming this fall since ceasing its operations two years ago due to the pandemic. Initiated in 2016, the club’s mission is to showcase films from different cultures, countries, and gazes, in both English and French. Operating in a welcoming space at The Little Green Library, the five-person council, consisting of movie enthusiasts and filmmakers, is thrilled to be presenting diverse cinematic fare to residents of the Valley once again. However, with film buffs still trepidatious about screening films in public, the committee for Ciné-Cinéma has decided to ease back into programming and will be focusing on six films to be presented for the 2022-2023 season: two before the Christmas holidays, and four early next year. According to Jean Lachance, founder and board member for the group, Huntingdon is fortunate to have a club of this kind, as it was uncertain whether the non-profit organization would remain economically viable. As Lachance says, “Earlier this summer we learned that Sodec was ceasing to finance small cinema operations like ours but, fortunately, the CA of The Little Green Libraryand federal MP Claude DeBellefeuille accepted hands-down to support Ciné-Cinéma.” The first of these screenings, on Friday, October 14, will be Summer of Soul, the Oscar-winning documentary regarding the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. Directed by Ahmir “Questolove” Thompson of American Hip Hop Band, The Roots, Summer of Soul is a celebration of ‘60s African American music. Though Ciné-Cinéma is enthused to be kicking off this season with such a vibrant and affirming presentation, it is equally excited to announce that as of this season it will be presenting its screenings free of charge, though donations are always welcome. Though the full programming for the season has yet to be finalized, interested persons can always refer to The Little Green Library’s Facebook page for updates on screenings. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. and viewers, as in the past, are welcome to stay following the presentations to discuss the movie.
