Châteauguay Valley Weather July 17-23, 2022

With four days in the past week with a daytime high over 30 degrees Celsius, and two other days that were pretty close, the summer heat has finally arrived. The average temperature jumped a full degree Celsius in the last week, reaching 21.4 degrees Celsius and exceeding the monthly average of 21.1 degrees Celsius for the first time this month. Helping the monthly average rise in temperature were some very warm nights, well above the normal, a trend that will continue for the rest of the month and well into August.

There was a good dollop of rain at the beginning of the week, with 26 mm falling in Ormstown and 47 mm and 32 mm being recorded at the St-Anicet and Ste-Clotilde Environment Canada weather stations’ respectively. This month’s total precipitation for Ormstown is 41.5 mm, which is well below average.

The corn heat units (CHU) followed the same trend as the average temperature, finally moving ahead of the normal CHU for this time of year. There have been 604 CHU so far for the month, and with the normal being 799 CHU, on a prorated basis, the CHU’s should be at 592. Since May 12th, the total CHU accumulation has been 1675, which is about normal.

A lot of corn has tasseled out over the last week, but the occurrence of pollination has been uneven in many fields. This will lead to uneven dry down in the fall at harvest time, making the drying of kernels more of a challenge as they will have different moisture levels.
