April has started out wet, so we assume May flowers will show up sometime soon. Eighteen millimetres of rain fell in the first four days of the month, so when combined with the 22 mm of rain that fell at the end of March, that’s half a month’s worth of precipitation in less than a week. The creeks are full and the tile drainage is running steady – as has the maple sap, given lots of days above and nights below zero.
The average temperature for April so far is 5.6 degrees Celsius which is a full degree below the normal of 6.5 C. Though warmer weather is yet to come, the average to date is relatively warm.
Aside from the flocks of geese that have descended into the cornfields in the evenings, the blackbirds and robins have reappeared, and a pair of ducks made their presence known with a startling takeoff out of the pond. Spring has arrived.
