With most of April in the bag, the month will end up close to normal for temperature and
above average for precipitation – an inauspicious start to spring that has few leaves on
the trees and puddles in the fields. Reader alert: the month of May won’t be much
better!
April has been steadily warming up towards the normal temperature for the month and
made a big leap in the past week. The average temperature jumped another degree
from 5.0 degrees Celsius during the previous week to 6.0 C in the past week. However,
this is still below the average for the month, which sits at 6.5 C. The yellow tinge of
leaves emerging on willow trees can be seen along riverbanks, but that’s about it for
“greenery.”
April also continues to be wetter than the previous period with a total of 25 millimetres of
rain in the last week, bringing precipitation for the month-to-date to 91 mm including 3
centimetres of snow. With additional rainfall anticipated for Sunday, April 27, the month
will end up as being officially wet.
With the cool weather and lots of clouds, the soil temperature has only just reached 10
C (50 degrees Fahrenheit), so there are a few degrees of warmth (and some dryness)
needed yet before planting can start.
May is forecast to be cool, with the majority of daytime highs well below normal, but not
excessively wet. So far for 2025, average temperature is 0.1 C above average, and
average precipitation (rain and melted snow) is 88 per cent of normal.
