The weather settled down in the past week after all the mayhem caused by the tail-end of Hurricane Debby the week before. There was only 8.6 millimetres of rain in the last week, bringing the month-to-date total to 136 mm. We’re only slightly more than halfway through the month, yet the rainfall is already 60 per cent higher than normal thanks to the deluge in the previous week.
After a warm start in the first two weeks of August, the average temperature continued to drop down towards the average for the month. The average dropped slightly in the past week, from 21.7 to 21.5 degrees Celsius, which is getting closer to the normal for the month of 20.2 C.
The heat units (CHU) continued ahead of the average pace, although slowing down as the month progresses. The total for August now stands at 446 CHU, which compares well with the prorated normal of 421 CHU. The normal for the month of August is 768 CHU, and the total for the season starting on May 19 is now 2429 CHU. For those who managed to plant corn in the first half of May, the accumulated total will be approximately 2609 CHU.
For the remainder of the month, daytime temperatures are forecast to be below normal in the coming week (18-22 C), then back up to normal for the remainder of the month (24-28 C). The nighttime lows will, however, be above average (14-16 C) and there will be showers and light rain on several days.
