Despite some really cold weather during the Christmas week, with temperatures dipping as low as -25 degrees Celsius overnight, December 2024 ended up being normal. Warm temperatures followed by cold followed again by relative warmth meant that the average temperature for the entire month settled at -4.4 C, just a smidgen warmer than the normal of -4.5 C. December 2024 was the 27th warmest December since weather records have been collected at the farm in Ormstown starting in 1966, a ranking reinforcing that the month was right on the average.
There was more precipitation during the last week of the month, bringing the total to 96 millimetres which was composed of 57 mm of rain and 42 centimetres of snow that melted down to 39 mm of water. This was about 15 per cent above normal, after several months of below-average precipitation in the fall.
January 2025 is forecast to be cold, with much of the month below average and lots of nights when the temperature will drop to between -10 and -20 C.
