March has started out both hot and cold, reaching 10 and 15 degrees Celsius on two dates, yet posting an average temperature of -4.3 C – a full three degrees below the monthly normal of -1.4 C. There will be several more warm days in the coming week – the maple sap has started to run! – before settling down for the remainder of the month at slightly below normal.
Precipitation in the past week was all rain but not as much as expected. There were two rainfalls at the end of the past week totalling 12 millimetres, which is only 60 per cent of normal. The main impact was to further assist the snow to melt, which went from a depth of 12 centimetres to zero on flat land, with just snow banks and drifts remaining. The ditches, creeks, and rivers are now full to the tops of their banks and flooding will likely occur in the low spots.
