March turned out on the warm side, with an average temperature of +0.9 degrees Celsius – the ten-year normal being -1.4 C. March 2025 was the ninth warmest in 59 years, but if it wasn’t for the two nights at the beginning of the month when the nighttime low hit -20 C and -25 C respectively, March would have been warmer still. Another indicator of a warm month was the fact that 12 nights and 15 days were warmer than normal for the nighttime lows and daytime highs respectively.
The month ended up with 18 centimetres of snow, which melted down to 23 millimetres of water (wet snow!) and 37 mm of rain, for a total of 60 mm of precipitation. This is 66 per cent of normal and continues the trend where five out of the last seven months have experienced below-average precipitation.
The ice went out on the Chateauguay River on March 17 which is within the normal range of March 14-21, and the first geese were spotted on March 5 – they now seem to come and go at all times at the end of fall and the beginning of spring, but the date seems about right!
April is forecast to have cool days with nights being slightly warmer than average – so the month should be average overall. The normal average for the month is +6.5 C.
