Ormstown Weatherman
Summer weather finally arrived in the Valley with daytime temperatures in the high twenties for several days.
This helped boost the average daily temperature from 8.3 degrees Celsius (the previous week) up to 10.4 degrees, but it’s still a long way off from the normal of 14.4 degrees. The coming week has a couple of days forecast to be over 30 degrees, so maybe we’ll catch up to the norm after all.
It’s still dry with no precipitation at all during the last week and only a chance of showers in the forecast. Rainfall since mid-April is now only about a quarter of what it should be.
Heat units are climbing slowly – which is also the pace of growth for cereals and corn which have only just emerged from the soil. The total for May is 190 HU with 69 HU being added last week. Normal for this date would be 408 HU.
The slow pace is not surprising given the cool nights with ground level temperatures still hovering as low as 3.5 degrees even though the soil temperature has continued to climb, with 7 degrees at night and 20 degrees during the day.
