Loblaw Companies has unveiled a revised timeline for the opening of a Maxi supermarket in Huntingdon. First announced during the spring of 2023, construction is set to begin on the new Maxi supermarket this May, with an anticipated opening by the end of the year.
“We realize that the wait has been long for Huntingdon residents, and we thank them for their patience and enthusiasm for the project,” said Patrick Blanchette, vice president of Maxi. “It is important to ensure that we deliver a solid, long-term project, and unforeseen challenges related to the site have required significant adjustments and close collaboration between Maxi, the developer, and the municipality,” he explained.
Initial plans had to be completely revised after issues, such as groundwater pressure, required complex technical solutions that forced developers to push back construction. This significantly increased construction costs, which forced Maxi to review its financial model for the project.
“The municipality of Huntingdon is important to us, and we are committed to establishing ourselves there. That’s why we have worked hard to find solutions and are pleased to announce that we have approved a new project, still at the same location, with a slightly reduced footprint,” said Blanchette, noting the change will not impact the availability of fresh quality products.
The original surface area of 28,000 square feet has been reduced by 4,000 square feet, resulting in a slightly smaller store. Maxi has been opening similar smaller-format stores over the past two years, and according to a press release issued by the company, these stores provide a complete and enjoyable shopping experience in an optimized space.
Construction will begin no later than this May, with an opening planned for December. The new supermarket is expected to create approximately 50 jobs in the region. (SR)
