CVR girls capture rugby sevens regional championship

“The team had the perfect season, winning all ten regular season games,” says coach Olivia De Witt-Huissteden, who led the CVR girls’ rugby sevens team to back-to-back regional championships on November 5 on home turf in Ormstown.

Chateauguay Valley Regional High School played host to the RSEQ championship tournament over the weekend, where the home team stormed the competition. The CVR girls defeated the team from Howard S. Billings High School 39-5 in the semi-finals, before facing the Patriotes from the École secondaire Saint Joseph de Saint-Hyacinthe in the finals. The final score in the gold medal game was 36-7 in favour of CVR’s Lady Spartans.

The team earned a total of 354 points during the season, while conceding only 61 points. Lead point scorers for the season are Peyton Welburn (116 points), Salome Lapp (89 points), and Naomi Lapp (79 points). “With only one substitute at each tournament, the players had to work every minute on the field with little to no breaks,” says De Witt-Huissteden. “They played with respect, humility, and Spartan pride, and made their coach extremely proud.” (SR)
