The second annual Kelsey Cup charity dek hockey tournament is set to take place on July 11 in Hemmingford.
The event is being organized by Dek Hemmingford to honour the memory of Kelsey Watt, a devoted fan and an important member of the Dek Hemmingford family, to raise awareness about domestic violence.
All of the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to SOS Violence Conjugale, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of intimate partner violence and their children. Last year, the tournament – as well as the sale of hockey helmet stickers in Kelsey’s memory – raised over $10,000 for the organization.
There were eight teams who participated in the inaugural event last year, and organizer Devon Watt said she is hopeful they will have a full slate of teams register for this year as well.
Watt explained that the tournament helps to keep her sister’s spirit alive. “No matter what sport I was playing, she was always there, so it is kind of like a way for me to still be connected with her.” She noted that having the sticker on the back of her own helmet and seeing it on so many others reinforces that sentiment.
The tournament is unique in that it is a sporting event that doubles as a support network for families that have experienced domestic violence. “The fact we are hosting this event in a male-centric world that garners so much support is very important also,” said Watt.
Aside from some exciting mixed four-on-four dek hockey, the event will also include local food vendors and an ice cream truck for spectators. Tournament merchandise will also be available.
