A sure harbinger of spring is seen in the small boy out with his marbles, playing “knockings.” We even saw a top-cord dangling from the bulging pocket of a lad of about 8 years.
For 8 days trains have been delayed, not so much by snow drifts as want of telegraph communication, for the wires were snapped in many places by the ice storms.
The heavy, freezing rain which fell Sunday night has caused much injury to trees in this section, especially to the elms, whose overhanging branches caused an extra strain from the accumulation of ice. Limbs 8 inches in diameter were broken by the weight, there being ice 2 inches in diameter on the twigs and small branches.

HUNTINGDON UNITED CHURCH BURNT TO GROUND ON SATURDAY – 126 Ft. Steeple in Flames Crashed to Ground – Defective Furnace Pipes Blamed for Cause of Fire – Smoke Baffles Volunteer Fire Fighters. – Not since December 9th, 1909, when the Central Hotel was burnt has Huntingdon been the scene of a fire of such magnitude until Saturday afternoon, March 13th when the United Church of Huntingdon was levelled to the ground in a space of two hours and a half time.

Valleyfield Span Being Planned: $3,000,000 Link With North Shore Counties Will Benefit Country … Legislation will be laid before the federal parliament this session to permit the Province of Quebec to build a bridge across the St. Lawrence River to link up Valleyfield with the North Shore Counties of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Chateauguay and Huntingdon, the Legislative Assembly was told this evening by Premier Duplessis.
ORMSTOWN – Thursday was Winter Carnival Day at Ormstown High. During the morning the junior grades went to the Arena when the Tribe’s Hockey Schedule was completed [Skating races included Laps, Backward, Obstacle, Couple Race – Speed, and Couple Race –Style].

A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO – some of us thought spring was around the corner. Some maple syrup producers started tapping. People’s thoughts turned to seed catalogues. And the ice going out of the rivers. Today, with blowing snow, blocked roads and unusually cold temperatures for this time of year, we envy all our friends basking in the sun in Florida, Cuba, the Carribean, etc.
HUNTINGDON ARTIST – John Ryan is holding a show of his paintings of the Chateauguay Valley from March 25 to April 12 at Galerie Andre Georges on St. Paul St. West in Montreal. John recently received a $4,000 grant from the Elizabeth T. Greenshields foundation to continue his work.
