HOWICK: Doctor J. Dow, a returned lady missionary, who has had the experience of many others in China during the recent uprising, gave an address in Knox church, Howick, on Monday evening, describing the work done in connection with medical and surgical treatment as well as the method of imparting religious instruction. It was quite evident from the gifted lady’s remarks, that the rough usage they lately endured has in no way discouraged the missionaries, but they feel that the work will be facilitated in the future by what has occurred. Altho the audience was not large, the collection for the W.M.S. funds amounted to $15.
WHITES STATION: Some of the whiskey fraternity gathered at the gravel pit on Sunday, and getting up a row, a said to be inoffensive fellow got a thumb nearly chewed off. We hear of something similar occurring at Casaville on the same day.

Charles Schwab – the American steel millionaire, tells this story on himself. At first, he says, when he became rich, he was inclined to have a swelled head. But one day he was out driving. He was sitting on the same seat with his coachman. A woman and a small boy were walking on the side of the road. The woman said – “Look! There is the great Mr. Schwab. “Which one? asked the little boy, earnestly. “After that,” says Schwab, “I didn’t think I was such a big fellow. That little boy cured me.”
Instructions to producers – Have all manure heaps removed. Fill in low places in yards. Fix Screens. See that sterilizing and cooling equipment is adequate, and in condition for summer season. Instruct new or inexperienced dairymen about sterilizing, especially strainer cloths. Trap or poison first flies which appear. Remove cows from pastures containing garlic or other strong weeds, at least four hours before milking.

Agronomists Visit N. April Farm to See Wine Made – New Industry Is Shaping Up – Only One of Its Kind in Canada – A very interesting afternoon was spent at the farm of Mr. N. April and M. F. Dufour, at Franklin, … about 100 visitors gathered there and inspected apparatus for making wine. … Upon arrival of the party, which also included several members of the press, they were taken to the very modern laboratory on the Dufour farm. Mr. April welcomed all those present and told them they would be told and see how a new wine was being manufactured from apples. … This is the only wine of its kind that is manufactured anywhere in Canada, but it is not yet available to the general public and it has no official name. Fow the time being it could be known as Champagne Cider…

WELL NOW – A phone call after The Gleaner was on the streets last week informed us in no uncertain terms that Filly Bear and his town men were well aware of the ‘trou’ on the Chateauguay St. approach to the Henderson St. bridge. “And they’ve been putting gravel in it every second day for weeks. It isn’t their fault if blacktop isn’t available yet.’
