Girls with Purpose: Huntingdon girls build friendship, confidence

Ten girls between the ages of six and eight took part in a fun three-week program called “Girls with Purpose” in Huntingdon over the summer.

The goal of the program was to build confidence and self-esteem for English-speaking girls in the area. It started last year in Châteauguay in partnership with the Montérégie West Community Network. This was the first time it took place in Huntingdon.

“It was fun. We made new friends, and we made a lot of crafts,” said some of the participants. “We came up with our own rules,” they explained. “We also did vision boards, had a spa day with face masks, made fidget boxes, and painted tote bags.”

Nadya Kovacs, the program coordinator with the MWCN, said her favourite part was watching each of the girls grow as the weeks went by. “It was fun to have kids here at the office and I enjoyed seeing girls from different schools and different ages become friends.”

The grand finale for the program was a family pizza party where the girls showcased their work for their families on August 21.

MWCN summer student Hallie McLean noted that she liked seeing the boost in confidence in the girls. “The very first day, everyone came in and they were very shy, and now when they come in, we have a hard time getting them to stop talking,” she said.
