Students from École Notre-Dame de Huntingdon and Heritage Elementary School joined together to create a wonderful mural to be displayed in the town.
The mural was an excellent chance for the students from both schools to work together. All the students in each school had a chance to work on the four-panel mural during the week of March 10. Teams of six ambassadors from each school met at Heritage Elementary on March 14 to complete the final touches.
This was the third mural in the Valley to be completed in partnership with Create to Get Closer Canada, a national organization that funds the creation of collective murals by children from official language communities. The town of Huntingdon also approved of the project, which features a spring scene including the two schools, the town hall, and other landmarks.
“It was an amazing experience to work with the kids from École Notre Dame because we got to work together even though we speak different languages,” said a Grade 5 student at Heritage Elementary.
The mural will soon be on display in a public area in Huntingdon. “I’m looking forward to seeing the mural up because I want to see what citizens think of our project,” said a Grade 6 Heritage student.
“I think the students really appreciated the experience,” said Mélanie Gervais, the representative from École Notre-Dame. “It showed their creativity, and they learned new skills. It is different from school with pencils and paper,” she added.
“I thought the experience had a lot of potential to be very positive,” said Heritage teacher Méla Caza-Pugh. “It was a wonderful thing to be able to host the French school.”
