John Abbott College reaches local communities

A partnership between John Abbott College, the Montérégie West Community Network (MWCN) and the Village Church in Ormstown, offered an opportunity for Ormstown residents and those from surrounding communities to benefit from a free general health assessment on March 25.

Over 30 visitors took part in the activity, which took place at the Village Church. Participants were able to have their blood pressure, glucose and oxygen levels monitored by nursing students, while ambulance technicians offered EKG screenings and dentistry students provided free dental check-ups. The students also provided many important health tips.

Each participant received a health booklet indicating their test results as well as EKG printouts which could be brought to their next doctor’s appointment.

The students were overseen by their teachers who were there to support the students and mingle with community members throughout the event. The CISSMO was also on hand to inform the future health-care workers of job availabilities within the local health network.

Prior to starting, teachers and students were treated to a pizza lunch courtesy of the MWCN, and members of the Village Church provided a table of delicious homemade goodies and healthy snacks throughout the day.

At a time when it is difficult to see a family doctor, this partnership created a safe environment supporting the health and well-being of our citizens and, at the same time, provided these final-year health students an opportunity to connect and utilize their learned skills.

It was representatives from the John Abbott health care program that reached out to the MWCN, and all involved are looking forward to hosting this type of event again in the future.
