We often hear, “It takes a village to raise a child.” But perhaps we should also say, “It takes an entire community to build a safety net around its people.”
Community organizations like Une Affaire de Famille are that net. They welcome, support, listen to, and accompany thousands of people from our area – especially in times of social crisis, like the one we are currently experiencing. Yet these very pillars of compassion are now facing serious financial fragility. Why? Because our political landscape is unstable, hesitant, and too often paralyzed by the four-year election cycle.
And in the meantime, families, youth, seniors, and workers from our own region are left in distress.
It’s time we stop thinking community organizations only exist for the most vulnerable. Anyone can go through a rough patch. Patrick and Martine, two nurses, thought they’d have to quit their jobs due to the lack of daycare spots – until they discovered UAF’s drop-in childcare. Stéphanie, overwhelmed by anxiety, was finally able to return to work after her daughter benefited from a language stimulation workshop. And Steve, 21 and deeply isolated, was considering ending his life until he found belonging at Jeudis Sans Limites.
In 2024-2025, 3,039 individuals accessed UAF’s services, including 1,219 who were committed to a regular program. This isn’t marginal – it’s central to our region’s wellbeing.
And yet, despite over thirty funding applications, the organization is facing a projected $150,000 shortfall for 2025-2026. Some services may not survive.
It’s time to build a lasting alliance: private businesses, foundations, regular donors, municipal leaders… your support is essential. Monthly giving, sponsorships, service partnerships – every bit helps.
And supporting a community organization isn’t just a heartfelt gesture – it’s also strategically smart. UAF offers drop-in childcare, workplace training, support for the integration of newcomers – and donation tax benefits to boot.
Haut-Saint-Laurent, what if we all stood up for those who, every single day, stand up for us?
