On the weekend of April 3, two girls from the Valley played hockey in the U18 provincial championships – the Coupe Chevrolet – in Quebec City. Olivia McColm and Alyssa Roy are a part of Team Quebec, which ended up winning every game, taking home the cup. Their team, Team Storm, won the regionals in Pierrefonds earlier this year, making them eligible for this tournament. Olivia and Alyssa, from Godmanchester and Huntingdon respectively, have been in school together since kindergarten and are graduating from high school this year.
Olivia’s father, Douglas McColm, says that the entire team was extremely dedicated and hardworking, practicing two nights per week plus playing two games every weekend. The whole team is so dedicated, they would practice in Saint Timothée every week until 10:30 p.m. They even went to practice when the big snowstorm happened in February, when the rink lost power partway through. McColm says, “When we started the year, the coaches said that it was going to be a fun year, that it’s a good bunch of girls, and they had a good feeling.” The girls worked hard and made friends, and the whole team is thrilled with the results of the season.
