Local women join forces for the environment

On April 15, women from across the region came together to commit to the future of young people and the planet, and created the Suroît-Sud branch of “Mères au front.” This is a not-for-profit organization where mothers, grandmothers, and allies join forces and work together to protect both the environment and the kids of the community. This new cohort is based in the Beauharnois-Salaberry and Haut-St-Laurent MRCs. The organization as a whole is a decentralized national movement that encourages local initiatives.

The goal of this group is to strengthen the social bonds of women to face the climate crisis. They hope to have a strong network of people who will have a positive and pacifist approach to taking action for the environment. A press release sent out by the organization says, “Mères au front gives love, beauty, poetry, art, and anger a central place in all its activities, whose primary aim is to protect our children’s future against climate inaction.”

Mères au front Suroît-Sud wants to reach citizens by creating events and attending others held by environmental organizations in the region. Actions taken by the group will always be committed to the future, but will be diverse, creative, and artistic in their approach.

The group already has over 15 members, and they have already started organizing. On April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Baie-Saint-François school in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, there will be an activity for Earth Day.
