The wait is finally over in Huntingdon.
The new Maxi supermarket opened its doors to a steady stream of eager clients on December 11. Somewhat serendipitously, the opening marked the milestone of the banner’s 200th store which coincided with the final days of the town’s bicentennial year.
Huntingdon mayor André Brunette, municipal councillors, and several high-level Loblaws and Maxi representatives were joined at the early-morning ceremony by comedian and actor Martin Matte, who has been the face of the company’s advertising campaigns for almost a decade.
The new 22,000-square-foot supermarket represents a multi-million-dollar investment in the town, and the creation of at least 60 new jobs.
“And now that it’s open, it’s the most beautiful gift that Maxi has given to our citizens and our surrounding neighbours for Christmas,” said Brunette.
The project involved significant work on the part of the town to provide additional infrastructure for commercial development along François-Cleyn Street. “The result is fantastic!” Brunette exclaimed.
Maxi’s vice-president, Patrick Blanchette, presented Brunette with a symbolic bottle of wine engraved with the Maxi logo to celebrate the opening. The mayor and several of the Loblaws and Maxi representatives then signed a commemorative plaque which was later installed at the supermarket entrance.
“This opening reflects our ongoing commitment to making quality products accessible at affordable prices to an ever-growing number of Quebecers and the many families who trust Maxi to provide their food,” said Blanchette.
“We are particularly proud to have reached the milestone of 200 stores today – a clear demonstration of our commitment to bringing our high-quality, affordable offering to even more communities,” he added.
The morning event included a few surprises. Blanchette presented Matte with a cheque for $50,000 for the Martin-Matte Foundation, which supports people who are suffering from head trauma or spinal cord injury.
Newly appointed store manager Julie Robidoux was also offered the opportunity to support a local cause. Having grown up in the area, Robidoux chose to donate $2,500 to the La Bouffe Additionnelle food pantry.
“Huntingdon is quite symbolic for me. I am from here. I live in Ormstown. I went to high school here. I am really happy to be able to be here today,” said Robidoux.
“My team and I look forward to welcoming customers and helping them discover the freshness and quality of their favourite products at the best price, in an all-new, modern environment,” she said.
“We are also committed to playing an active role in the community, supporting local organizations and making a positive impact on the lives of our customers,” Robidoux added.
Before returning to Montreal, Matte posed for photos with customers before spoiling a few with Maxi gift cards. The first 500 clients also received a free Maxi reusable grocery bin.
