A family of four seeking refugee status was found by RCMP officers in a wooded area in the municipality of Havelock in the early morning of March 7, after they got lost trying to cross the border.
In a video posted by CTV News, RCMP spokesperson Martina Pillarova noted the family was found huddled against a tree unable to move, about one kilometre away from the closest road.
The RCMP received a call from the Sûreté du Quebec after the mother called 911. Pillarova said that according to available information, the family had been walking in the woods for many hours with their two young children. “They were in a situation where they did not have much energy left anymore. They were frozen,” she reported, noting the children were just one and two years old.
The terrain was so difficult, the RCMP were not able to use any of the vehicles or technology at their disposal for the search and rescue operation. Officers located the family on foot around 4:15 a.m.
According to the report by CTV News, the family was suffering from extreme hypothermia when they were found. They were not wearing appropriate clothing for winter weather. They were taken to a hospital in Chateauguay, where their lives are not considered to be in danger.
The family requested refugee status, and their case has been transferred to the Canada Border Services Agency. (SR)
