Murder charges follow fatal altercation in Huntingdon

Max Brunner, 31, was formally charged with the second-degree murder of Adam Aitkens following a brief appearance at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield courthouse on July 27.

The Sûreté du Québec confirmed that Aikens, 54, was involved in a violent altercation that took place on Wellington Street in Huntingdon shortly after 9 p.m. on July 26.

Aitkens was unresponsive when officers arrived on scene. He was transported immediately to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers arrested Brunner, a local resident, later that evening in connection with the incident. He was questioned overnight before appearing the following afternoon to face charges in court.

“The homicide theory has been confirmed,” said SQ spokesperson Sergeant Louis-Philippe Ruel, before noting the investigation is ongoing. (DS, translated by SR)

Reminds me of the 1980s murder well covered by Gleaner French editor Cyril Alary, even visiting the accused in prison.

The stabbing details are disturbing from the recent crime, reported elsewhere: https://www.journaldemontreal.com/2026/07/27/meurtre-a-huntingdon–la-communaute-est-stupefaite-au-lendemain-de-lattaque-violente-sans-raison-apparente
