Pickleball for the win

The Montérégie West Community Network (MWCN) hosted the Valley’s first pickleball tournament at Chateauguay Valley Regional High School on May 25. Over 24 players participated in the tournament, which featured a competitive, recreational, and beginner division.

The popularity of the sport has been skyrocketing, and the MWCN has been along for the ride. The organization received provincial funding around two years ago to promote active lifestyles among seniors. They bought pickleball equipment and set up a league, not really knowing what to expect.

“It went from zero to 100,” says the MWCN’s Kim Wilson, of the program that now includes over 60 pickleball enthusiasts. “We had no idea it would blossom the way it has,” she adds, noting they were also taken aback by how significant the game has become for their members.

“I started playing in October and now play up to five times a week,” says Marlene Harvey, who was playing in the competitive division during the tournament. “It’s addictive,” she says with a laugh. “It challenges me and it’s good for my mental health,” she adds, before commenting that the players have become like family.

“We have kids, we have seniors, and we are French and English,” says Dorothy Mays, of the pickleball league. She moved to Ormstown five years ago, and admits that following the pandemic, she was desperate to get out of the house. “We’ve made loads of friends,” she says. Alan Dodd, who arrived in Huntingdon around the same time in 2019, shares a similar story. “It opened up the world,” he says of finding the MWCN and pickleball. (SR)
