A Toronto man was arrested on Wednesday in Ormstown by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Emergency Response Team (ERT) as part of a national security operation.
According to a report by Radio-Canada which cites two independent police sources, the individual was arrested in a terror-related investigation around 5 p.m. near the intersection of Gale and Church Streets.
The suspect was apparently heading towards the border with the intent to cross illegally into the United States when he was intercepted. According to eye-witness accounts, undercover officers who had been tailing the suspect from Toronto were joined by the ERT to make the arrest. Three others were also detained in the operation.
Witnesses say the RCMP vehicle rammed the suspect’s car and that officers allegedly used stun grenades to immobilize him, before removing and arresting him.
Radio-Canada is reporting that police suspect the individual was planning to commit an attack.
The RCMP has not commented following the arrest, which was conducted by Ontario-based officers. (SR)
