The creation of a new ecocentre in Sainte-Barbe is now another step closer to becoming a reality.
On November 15, the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation (MAMH) confirmed that the municipality of Sainte-Barbe will receive $250,000 in funding for the intermunicipal project, which so far includes Elgin, Godmanchester, and Huntingdon as supporting municipalities.
Sainte-Barbe mayor Louise Lebrun gathered with Elgin mayor Deborah Stewart, Godmanchester mayor Pierre Poirier, and Huntingdon mayor André Brunette at the site of the future ecocentre on Route 132 for the funding announcement. Representatives from the four partner municipalities were also present, as well as Huntingdon MNA Carole Mallette, and Émilie Escafit, the waste management coordinator for the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent.
“I salute the cooperation between the municipalities of Sainte-Barbe, Elgin, Godmanchester, and the town of Huntingdon, in presenting this project for an ecocentre, and I am delighted to see it come to fruition,” said Mallette. “I would like to congratulate all the partners who have rallied around this initiative. It is by working together that we can achieve great things, and that is what is reflected here today,” she added.
Sainte-Barbe intends to present the sub-regional project to other neighbouring communities, including the municipalities of Saint-Anicet, Hinchinbrooke, and Dundee. Along with the quarter-million in funding from the provincial Ministry of municipal affairs and housing, the project has also received a $100,000 grant from Recyc-Québec.
According to the Journal Saint-François, the municipality intends to issue the call for tenders for the project toward the end of January. The ecocentre could be opened as early as next October. (SR)

I’m interested to learn more about the Ste. Barbe “ecocentre”. Is it a preserve and observation deck for the snow geese? Looks like a large parking lot on the billboard or is that a river? Thanks.
