Past and present senior members and executives of the Ormstown Saracens Rugby Club gathered at the end of November for the annual banquet and awards night highlighting the 2024 season. The social aspect of rugby is foundational to the sport. Many of the speeches made reference to the family and friendship that is found through the sport of rugby. This was certainly upheld throughout the evening with a shared meal and singing and dancing late into the night!
In summary, the 2024 season was another success. The senior men had a great season but ended just short of the finals. The senior women’s return to the pitch was capped by some victories and some amusing fall 7s. There was promising growth in the junior and mini membership, for both boys and girls, with increasing participation by parents.
The awards reflected both the talent and involvement in the club. Rookie of the Year was won by Shamus Baillie and Élody Chagnon. Most Improved was awarded to Anthony-Blain Parent and Élody Chagnon. The Member at Large highlighted the work of Jamie Bohemen. Outgoing club president Phylicia Brunette won the Hardest Worker award. Most Social was voted as Lindsay Roy. Runner Up MVP was awarded to Alexandre Audette and Shannon Roy, with MVP going to Mark Sample and Sophie Van Horne. The Rod Beattie award was named to Alex Sample, while the Triple D was awarded to Shannon Roy.
Special presentations were made for Gerry Brunette and Cynthia Boyd for their induction into the Hall of Fame. Serge Tremblay, Brunette’s former teammate, spoke of his inspiring work ethic for the team. Similarly, Boyd’s former coach, Patrick Bourdeau-Collum, highlighted her skills and positive attitude on and off the pitch. Together, they join a growing list of important players and contributors to our club.
As 2024 comes to a wrap, the new executive team is looking towards the 2025 season. Winter teaming is underway for the senior men at CVR on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. The senior women begin their training February 9 at the Saint-Antoine-Abbé rec centre from 2 to 4 p.m. Children U6 to U12 begin their sessions at CVR on February 4 from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Make 2025 the year you TRY rugby!
