Every few years, the Haut Saint Laurent Seniors’ Table organizes the Haut Saint Laurent Seniors’ Fair. Lynn McWhinnie, a member of the Table, says, “We have an organizing committee made up of representatives from several different organizations who provide services to seniors.” They define seniors as aged 50 and up.
This year’s event is the fourth edition of the fair and will take place on September 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chateauguay Valley Regional High School (CVR).
Guests of the fair this year can expect to see about 50 organizations and associations. McWhinnie explains that these organizations have reserved kiosk space to inform local residents of the multitude of services, volunteer opportunities and resources available for the 50-plus age group in the Haut-Saint-Laurent.
The kiosks will be set up throughout CVR’s hallways, and in the cafeteria, there will be four conferences throughout the day: two in English and two in French. McWhinnie says, “One will address the subject of fraud affecting seniors, and the other is concerning the expanded role of the pharmacist.” A light lunch will be available to purchase as well.
This fair is a great place for older adults to learn about what the Valley has to offer. “Many residents aren’t aware of all of the services available in their community until they need them. Our goal in hosting a seniors’ fair every three-four years is to inform the public so that they can take advantage of services. It is also a great time for those who are newly retired, or approaching retirement, to learn of volunteer opportunities,” McWhinnie explains.
But this fair isn’t just for seniors. McWhinnie says “I’m looking forward to having families attend the fair. Children of seniors can become informed of what might benefit their parents.” It’s important for both older people and their families to be aware that services are available to them before they need them, so they can be prepared.
The event is free to attend. For more information, check out their Facebook page: Salon des aînés du Haut-Saint-Laurent Seniors Fair.
