At just a few days shy of her 86th birthday, Betty Riel climbed into the front seat of the 1947 fire truck leading a line of around 30 tractors as the eighth annual Tractor Parade in her name took to the streets. The parade took off from the Huntingdon fairgrounds on Sept. 7 before weaving its way through the Hinchinbrooke countryside on a 24-kilometre route that brought the drivers back to their starting point, where a barbeque lunch was waiting. “It is a social day for everyone, and we raise a little money at the same time,” said organizer Ken Elder. “It’s for a good cause,” added co-organizer Denis Faubert. Everything for the lunch was donated, and all the profits will go to the Betty Riel Foundation, which provides free transport to cancer patients from the Haut-Saint-Laurent. (SR)
