My family purchased an old farmstead on Covey Hill in the early 90s. It came with an old farmhouse that was not habitable and a selection of old broken-down farm buildings. It is the last property in Franklin adjacent to the Havelock municipality.
Over the years, we have renovated the house to make it liveable and have built a stable to house rescue horses.
The present evaluation is $713 700. Last year, our taxes exploded! In Franklin, the tax rate is 66 cents per $100 of evaluation, so we must pay $4,710.24.
If the property was in Havelock, whose tax rate is 38 cents per $100 of evaluation, our taxes would be $2,712.06.
It costs $2,000 more per year to have a Franklin address! This is not acceptable.
