At Petch Orchards (431 Route 202, Hemmingford), October 25-26 is “Bring Your Dog Weekend.” Leashed dogs are welcome this weekend only… and on October 26 there will be a dog costume contest at noon!

De fils en aiguille, l’univers métissé de Richard is a retrospective presented by Richard Hansen of Huntingdon, highlighting his nearly fifty years in the visual arts, theater, film, dance, and television. Recognized for outstanding contributions to the world of makeup, hair, wigs, and costume design, Hansen has worked on productions for film and stage including the 1983 Academy Award-winning film Quest for Fire. The reception at the Salle Culturelle Alfred Langevin (10 King Street, Huntingdon) is on Sunday, October 26, at 2 p.m. The exhibition runs from October 26 to November 23, and is open Saturdays and Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and weekdays by reservation. Showing on Friday, October 31, at 7:30 p.m. is SING SING by Greg Kwedar, inspired by a true story and nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Actor, at the Little Green Library in Huntingdon (4 Lorne Street). Info on all screenings can be found on the library’s website.
Halloween activities
Ever hear of a witch who collects wizards? There will be a Halloween virtual presentation of the play La Labyrinthe de la Forêt Décrépit for kids aged 5 to 12 on Saturday, October 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Green Library in Huntingdon. Dress up and get lost in the corn maze at Jamieson Maple (121 Brooke Road) on October 25, 7 to 10 p.m. – in the dark! There is also a haunted house, as if it wasn’t spooky enough. Admission for over 4 is $15; tickets are at showpass.com/halloween-maze-night.
The fifth edition of Halloween on Édouard Street (next to the hospital) in Valleyfield has so much going on it would take a whole Gleaner to describe it. From 4 p.m. to midnight, the street hosts a plethora of festivities; check the Facebook event page for details. Suffice it to say that there will be decorations beyond the pale, magical illuminations, food trucks, performances, inflatables, games, pumpkin carving, costume contests, scavenger hunt, a flash mob…
Bottle drive
Heritage Elementary in Huntingdon will be hosting a Genie in a Bottle fundraiser on Saturday, November 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop-off will be at 822 Route 138, Godmanchester. Please bring rinsed bottles and cans, with tabs/plastic caps separate; wine/beer/alcohol bottles, plastic bottles up to 2-litres, aluminum cans, and batteries.
Les Aidants du HSL
Les Aidants du Haut-Saint-Laurent is holding a conference and workshop on understanding feelings of guilt associated with caregiving on Monday, November 4, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. It is free, and you can participate virtually or in person. The organization is holding a supper conference featuring wellness speaker Étienne Drapeau, at the Très-Saint-Sacrement town hall (1180 Route 203) on Friday, November 21 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $45 for members, $50 for non-members. Reserve by November 13; see contact info above.
