A Gleaner journalist’s film camera with removeable hot-shoe flash tells the story of its demanding life 50 years ago. Awkward and heavy compared to today’s equipment, reporters’ cameras often hung from the neck or were bumped and slung about by the strap as the bearer pursued the shot or jumped in the car to cover the next happening. The flash emitted a tiny angst-inducing whine that rose in pitch until the ready light was on. Sometimes it was slow – resulting in considerable stress, as not all shots could wait! Recently unearthed with a vintage Ormstown Expo press pass, the 35mm Minolta shows its heavy use, battle scars, and hasty repairs from over the years. The film advance lever is now jammed. (ET)
