A chance encounter in June between Cindy Ovans, the people’s warden at the St. James Amglican Church in Ormstown, and cyclist Bobby Bourgeois has led to the organizing of a benefit concert for Ukraine.
When Bourgeois learned the church has good acoustics, he suggested he could help organize a benefit concert with Ukrainian-born soprano Maryna Krejcarova, who has been performing concerts for Ukraine in and around Montreal and the West Island since the war broke out last year. As part of a cyclist group, Bourgeois knows the Ormstown area; and, says Ovans, he thought it would make a good setting for a concert.
“We started talking, and the whole thing blossomed from there,” says Ovans, who hopes the concert will not only help raise funds for Ukraininan relief, but help to keep the church doors open and attract new people to activities there.
The concert, which takes place on August 13 at 3 p.m., will feature a selection of classical and Ukraininan songs sung by Krejcarova, who will be accompanied by musicians from the West Island.
“It would be wonderful to have lot of people,” says Ovans, who suggests it would be wise for people to reserve their seats in advance by calling her at 514-222-9433. (SR)
