Back in my grandmother’s day, when a woman left the home where she grew up with her parents, it was usually to get married. In those days women were mostly dependant on their spouses to put a roof over their heads and food on the table. They kept their homes clean, cooked, and raised their children.
In my mom’s generation, women became more independent as jobs and higher education became more available to them. Those days, both the husbands and the wives were working to take care of the family expenses, as the cost of living was continually rising. But a couple that were married usually stayed together mostly all of their lives, as divorce was often not an option.
My generation, and the following generation, in my experience was a whole different story. Women were even more independent and preferred a career to settling down, getting married, and having a family. Instead of spending their life with one man, it was easier to just leave a relationship that was in trouble than to stick with it and put energy into making it work.
For most of my adult life, I went often into romantic relationships that unfortunately didn’t work out. It always seemed like the right one at the moment and then, well, … .
It’s not easy to live with an artist and I empathized with the men that were in a relationship with me.
Most of my relationships were with musicians that I worked with, but being with someone 24 hours on 24, seven days a week, can put a strain on a couple. Jealousy was also a problem, which was hard to avoid in my line of work.
Sometimes I’d have to perform after a day of verbally fighting with my partner, which made the joy of singing and performing that night almost impossible for me. Hence, the inspiration for this lyric and song.
When Loves Leaves the Room
I won’t let you let a good thing get away.
We’ve tried so hard, you know we’ve come so far.
Not a day goes by that I don’t give thanks for you,
And the love I have for all the things you are.
But when you look at me that way, Like I’ve done something wrong,
There’s a sadness that comes over me.
I feel an ache inside so strong.
We don’t look at each other, our eyes don’t wanna see
That there’s an empty space between us, where the passion used to be.
I’ve tried to tell you time and time again,
That I believe, I believe that we can change,
But we try so hard, so hard to hide the truth.
Then there’s that moment when it all seems so clear,
It’s when I breathe, I breathe the essence of you.
But when you look at me that way, like I’ve done something wrong,
There’s a sadness that comes over me, I feel an ache inside so strong.
We don’t look at each other, our eyes don’t wanna see
That there’s an empty space between us where the passion used to be.
I tried to tell you time and time again,
That’s when love,
That’s when love leaves the room.
That’s when my heart cries stop it,
Stop and look at what we do,
Me and you.
