A small group of activists started a letter-writing campaign over two decades ago, in Poland for Human Rights Day on December 10. Today, Write for Rights is one of the world’s biggest human-rights events, with activities taking place throughout the globe.
The Hemmingford Action Circle, which formed around 20 years ago, has been holding letter-writing marathons regularly for years. Members sign online petitions year-round to help defend human rights, and they have written many, many letters.
This year, the letter-writing campaign features people from many countries, including Canada, Angola, Belarus, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Vietnam, Egypt, and South Korea, where human rights are being violated. Letters are written to both those whose rights have been wronged to reassure them and their families they have not been forgotten, and to demand action on the part of the authorities.
The write-a-thon will take place on December 7 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Forrest Figsby Hall (531 Champlain Street) in Hemmingford. All are welcome to join in this action. (SR)
