Narcotics seized in Ormstown
An investigation that began several months ago led to the seizure of several types of narcotics from a residence located on McNeil St. in Ormstown on Aug. 28.
Police officers of the Sûreté du Québec’s Haut-Saint-Laurent station, in collaboration with dog handlers, seized over 1,500 methamphetamine tablets, approximately 75 grams of cocaine, around 100 grams of cannabis, over 150 pharmaceutical pills and an unspecified amount of Canadian money.
The seized substances will now be subject to an analysis to confirm their exact nature. No arrests have been made to date in this case, however the investigation continues
Speeding in Ormstown
On Aug. 29, at approximately 8:45 p.m., officers from the local Sûreté du Québec station stopped a motorist for excessive speeding on Highway 201 in Ormstown. The driver was travelling at 153 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.
The 44-year-old driver, a resident of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, was issued a ticket for $1,238 as well as 14 demerit points. His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for a period of seven days in accordance with the Highway Safety Code.
The Sûreté du Québec would like to remind drivers that speed is one of the main causes of fatal collisions on Quebec roads and that the risk of being involved in an accident doubles every 5 km/h above the speed limit.
Five arrested in Saint-Anicet
On Aug. 25, officers from the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), with the assistance of the Sûréte du Québec, seized over 632 kg of contraband tobacco valued at $148,697. Five people from Saint-Anicet were arrested in connection with this seizure.
The police intercepted the individuals as they were attempting to import unstamped cut tobacco using two pleasure craft on Lac Saint-François. The primary suspects had been under surveillance for several weeks.
Officers also executed a search at a private residence which resulted in the seizure of $8,100. Several vehicles, including two boats, three cars and two trailers were also confiscated during the course of the operation.
The five persons arrested were released and will appear before the court at a later date to face charges of possession of unstamped tobacco products under the Excise Act, 2001.
The RCMP has issued an appeal to the public, reminding all that the illicit tobacco trade presents a threat to the health and safety of Canadians. It is illegal to possess or sell tobacco products that are not packaged or stamped as required by Canadian law. It is important to be aware that the purchase of contraband tobacco products is funding criminal activity.

Traffic violations in school zones
As part of the back-to-school season, various police operations are being carried out throughout the province. On the morning of Sept. 1, Sûréte du Québec officers from the MRC du Beauharnois-Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, were present outside elementary schools in Valleyfield and Sainte-Martine to ensure compliance with the Highway Safety Code. Officers issued a total of eight tickets for not respecting the speed limit in a school zone as well as four tickets for other offences.
With the return to school, the presence of school buses, pedestrians, cyclists and crossing guards will increase traffic on the road network. All road users are encouraged to exercise caution to ensure the safety of all.
