Châteauguay Valley Weather February 2024

February 2024 ended up as the 3rd warmest in the last 57 years since records started being kept at the farm in Ormstown. The average temperature ended up at -2.4°C, one degree warmer than the first three weeks, this being mainly due to the last few days of the month when the daytime high soared close to +20°C and set records for February 27 and 28.

The normal temperature for February is -8.0°C. Combined with the fact that December 2023 was the 4th warmest for that month, and January 2024 the 7th warmest, the winter of 2023-2024 (November to March) could be close to a record for warmest winter if March is only slightly warmer than normal. The winter of 2013-2014 was the warmest in the record books at the farm in Ormstown and currently November through February this winter is much warmer than the previous record. November 2023 was the only month this winter so far to be colder than normal.

The warmest February was recorded in 1981, with an average temperature of -0.4°C, when the apple trees in the Valley blossomed early and then many were killed by the ensuing cold weather; the second warmest February was in 1974 with an average temperature of  -1.8°C. La Presse reported that Montreal has just experienced the second warmest meteorological winter (December to February) since 1871, the warmest being the winter of 2001-2002.

There was only 19 cm of  snow during the month, which melted down to 14 mm of water, bringing the total precipitation for February to 22 mm when adding on the 8 mm of rain that fell during the month. This is less than an inch of moisture and only 30% of normal – a very dry month even if it didn’t seem that way.

March

Given that there are only two days of the month recorded so far, one should not put too much stock in the fact that March is starting off colder than normal. The average temperature so far in March is -3.0°C, and the normal is -1.4°C.

That won’t last too long as the first half of March is forecast to be above average for temperature, especially at night during the first two weeks when the nighttime low will be higher than the average daytime high for several of the days. The second half of March is forecast to be cooler than normal, with nighttime lows well below freezing right through to April.

There was 4.5 mm of rain recorded in the first two days of March, which is slightly below normal, but it’s early days yet for weather results in the coming month.
