January 2024 has started where December 2023 left off – warmer than normal – but this time with some snow instead of rain. The rain will, however, arrive later in the week ahead.
The average temperature for the first week of the month settled at -4.6°C, a good four degrees above the normal of -8.6°C, which is pretty close to the 3.8°C difference (above normal) registered last December.
The above average temperature in January can be attributed to the first three days of the month when the nighttime lows were well above average, particularly January 3 when the nighttime low was above the average daytime high. Topsy-turvy for sure.
Precipitation was minimal until January 6 when the first snowstorm of the year rolled into town, leaving 10 cm of snow by Saturday night and more coming down on Sunday. Total precipitation for the month-to-date is 13.4 mm, made up of 2 mm of rain and 11.4 mm of melted snow.
