Châteauguay Valley Weather March 3–9, 2024

Despite a few cool days at the beginning of the month, March soon reverted to what seems to be the norm for the winter of 2023-2024 – average temperatures well above normal. The average temperature shifted gears quickly, starting at -3.0°C and ending up after a week and a bit at +3.1°C; the normal is -1.4°C.

The forecast is for another week of warmer than normal temperatures, especially at night, then a week of usual . . . regular . . . normal winter weather with the temperatures at night well below freezing, and finishing with the last week of March having average temperatures above normal – again.

A recent analysis of the average monthly temperatures taken at the farm in Ormstown over the last 57 years reveals that winters are warming much more so than summers. The average temperature for winter months (November to March) has risen +2.8°C, while the increase for summer months is only +0.92°C. Not so much snow to blow and much easier on the heating bill than before.

After a dry February, March has started quite wet with a total of 48 mm of rain in the first 9 days, which is twice the average if extrapolated across the entire month. The ground surface is soft and mushy in many places, with lots of puddles. This is likely due to the top layer of the ground becoming defrosted with the warmer than normal temperatures, yet there still remains frost deeper down, which is blocking the surface water from draining away.
