Châteauguay Valley Weather May 12-18, 2024

As the expression goes, what a difference a few days make! In the space of less than a week, May turned from being cool to hot, and the damp fields from all the rain in April dried quicker than anticipated as evidenced by the surge of tractor activity in the last few days as farmers got busy planting.

The average temperature jumped a degree and a half during the last week, up from 12.9°C to 14.5°C. The normal for the entire month is 14.3°C. The increase came from an unforecast mini-heat wave that brought daytime temperatures into the upper 20’s, and they may even get to 30°C before it’s finished by the middle of the coming week.

The daily showers didn’t materialize as forecast and there was only 8 mm of rain in the past week, bringing the month-to-date total to 40 mm, which is slightly below normal.

With the exception of a few low spots, the soil surface is now dried out and cultivation and planting should proceed at a rapid pace. The unexpected rebound in daytime temperatures also raised the ground temperature some more, registering a high daily temperature of 24.5°C (76°F), indicating the soil is more than ready to germinate the planted seeds.

The third week of the month is forecast to be warmer than average for both daytime highs and nighttime lows, with a return to normal temperatures for the last week. There are a few days forecast for showers but no sustained rain is predicted
