Chateauguay Valley weather report March 24 – 30, 2024

Despite the cooler weather at the end of March, the month closed out well above normal for average temperature. The warmer temperatures also brought much more rain than snow, with only six days of the month with measurable snow on the ground.

The average temperature dipped a couple of degrees in the last two weeks, from 3.4 degrees Celsius to 2.0, but it was still 3.5 degrees above the normal for the whole month of March at -1.4 C. It was the fifth warmest month of March since records have been kept on the farm in Ormstown starting in 1967. The warmest was March 2012 with an average temperature of 4 C.

March started off as a very wet month, but the pace slackened as the month went on. There were only 2 millimetres of rain in the last week, bringing the monthly total to 92 mm of precipitation, which is slightly above normal. This was made up of 71 mm of rain and 16 centimetres of snow, which melted down to 21 mm of water.

Warmest Winter

The past winter, measured as November 2023 to March 2024, was the warmest since records have been kept on the farm, with an average temperature of -0.74 C. The previous warmest winter was 2011-2012 at -0.8 C and the four warmest winters have all occurred in the last 22 years.

April is forecast to be average for temperature but starting cooler than normal at the beginning – with a chance of snow! – and a warm spot in the middle. The nighttime lows will also be much warmer than normal for a good part of the month, as was the case for January, February, and March of this year.
