September has started out a little bit warm and a little bit wet, following in the footsteps of the month before.
The average temperature for the first week was 17.7°C, a good degree and half above the normal for the month, which is 16.2°C. Despite the significant drop in temperature overnight from Saturday to Sunday, the next two weeks are forecast to be much warmer than normal for both daytime highs and nighttime lows. The temperature for the Saturday of Havelock Fair is forecast to be 28°C.
Rainfall in the same period was 24 mm, which is only slightly above average but significant enough given the very high level of precipitation received in August. However, the remainder of the month is looking pretty dry, with little precipitation in the forecast.
The corn heat unit (CHU) accumulation followed the above average temperatures, recording 145 CHU for the first week of the month, which compares favourably against the prorated normal for the week of 130 CHU. The normal for the entire month is 559 CHU. The total for the season starting on May 19, has now reached 2873 CHU, and for those who managed to plant corn in the first half of May, the accumulated total will be nearing 3000 CHU.
