The Centre Intégré de Services de Santé et des Services Sociaux de la Montérégie-Ouest (CISSSMO) is celebrating the first anniversary of the region’s midwifery service, which was launched in February 2024.
The service allows expectant mothers to be accompanied by a midwife throughout their pregnancy, including all psycho-social and medical aspects, delivery, and six weeks of post-natal care for the mother and her new baby.
Over the past year, the midwifery program provided care for 27 new mothers, while another 59 women are currently being followed by a midwife.
The service developed over the past year in collaboration with doctors, perinatal professionals, the hospital staff at the Hôpital du Suroît in Salaberry de Valleyfield, and the Hôpital Anna-Laberge in Chateauguay. The program also works with perinatal and early-childhood teams, community services, associations, and parents’ committees. These collaborations make it possible to meet growing demand for midwifery care while offering tailored support to expectant mothers and their families according to their needs and preferences.
“We would like to thank all the families who have placed their trust in us during this first year,” said Isabelle Papineau, the CISSSMO’s director of Youth Programs and Public Health Activities. “We look forward to continuing to grow with you and to welcoming many more births in the region,” she added.
There are currently six midwives working with the program, supported by three birth attendants. Pregnancy check-ups and appointments take place at the service point at 181 Rue Victoria in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. (SR)
