The Centre de services scolaires de la Vallée-des-Tisserands (CSSVT) is hoping to accommodate its steadily growing student population over the next ten years by opening six new schools throughout its territory.
The school service centre released its list of requests for school expansion and new construction projects to be included in the Plan québécois des infrastructures (PQI) 2025-2035 on October 25. Based on demographic data and forecasts produced by the Ministère de l’Éducation, as well as planned residential developments throughout the territory, these requests are part of a strategic approach to meet growing space requirements.
The CSSVT’s Commitment to Success Plan 2025-2030 calls for the creation of new spaces and the addition of modular classrooms. “This measure will allow us to meet the demands of the community by offering safe, creative, and lively environments while we wait for confirmation from the MEQ for new construction,” says the CSSVT’s director general, Suzie Vranderick.
Within the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent, the CSSVT has requested the construction of a new elementary school with 17 classrooms in the Town of Huntingdon. The service centre is also hoping the government will approve an expansion project at École secondaire Arthur-Pigeon that would accommodate an additional 400 students at the regional high school while adding space for general adult education.
Within the MRC de Beauharnois-Salaberry, requests were submitted for the creation of a new 17-room elementary school in Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague, as well as a new 24-room elementary school on the grounds of the existing École Saint-Paul in Beauharnois. The CSSVT also hopes to expand the École secondaire des Patriotes-de-Beauharnois to accommodate 625 more students while creating more space for adult education.
Salaberry-de-Valleyfield could see the construction of two new elementary schools for a total of 48 new classrooms, as well as a new secondary school with room to accommodate up to 1,000 students. The CSSVT is also planning to add two classrooms to the Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Esprit elementary school as well as a vocational training health centre at the Centre de formation professionnelle du Suroît’s Sainte-Cecile building.
The CSSVT also anticipates the installation of up to 12 modular classrooms for the start of the 2025 school year between two elementary schools in Valleyfield, as well as eight portable classrooms in Saint-Étienne-de-Beauharnois. (SR)
