Ferme Montcalm et Frères lauded for 100 years of farming

Salaberry-Suroit MP Claude DeBellefeuille celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Ferme Montcalm et Frères in Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague with an honourary tribute addressed in the House of Commons on October 26.

DeBellefeuille shared that “It was important for me to make known the contribution of this great agricultural family. When I think of the Montcalms, it is with a great source of pride. They are involved everywhere in our community, they innovate, they are really role models.” Members of the family were in attendance in the gallery and were received by Anthony Rota, the Speaker of the House of Commons.

The Ferme Montcalm et Frères dairy farm was started in 1922 and its activities are now being run by a fourth generation of farmers. The farm marked its centennial with a brand new, state-of-the-art barn. In her speech, DeBellefeuille said, “I’ll tell you the secret of their recipe: it is by always being ahead of their time that they have been able to prepare for the future,” as an explanation as to how the farm has persevered for so long.
Her speech earned a standing ovation from all parties in recognition and support of the Montcalm family’s contributions to the region. (CF)
