VALLEYFIELD: The deep waterways’ party of surveyors have about completed the outside work on the survey for the proposed canal to connect the St. Lawrence with Lake Champlain. A feature of the survey that may cause surprise to some is, that the level of the St. Lawrence, west of the town of Valleyfield, is considerably higher than the level of the Chateauguay in Ormstown.

ORMSTOWN WILL ENLARGE SCHOOL: … It was decided to go ahead and construct an addition of 32 x 42 feet, two stories high, with lavatories in the basement and class rooms on the first and second floors. The building is to be erected on the east side of the present building. A grant of $4000, payable in four equal instalments will be given by Quebec and the School Board has a balance of $4000 in hand, so it is expected that the building can be financed out of the present funds.

HUNTINGDON: The field of entertainment has naturally been varied in Huntingdon, but we note that in 1904, Huntingdon supported a “Coney Island” of its own. The site was the island below the mill dam and on the island was built an amusement hall. The hall housed a bowling alley and had a spacious ballroom. A wooden footbridge connected the island with the mainland.

THIS AND THAT: Odd, isn’t it– that with all the high water last week, Ourtown’s drinking (‘scuse please) tap water wasn’t nearly so foul as it was during the previous week’s thaw. Must be that Mother Nature gave us most of our soup du jour de la barnyard during the first heavy rain and once that was cleared off the fields, we’re now getting almost pure Chateauguay River water. Yuck!
