Grow a greener garden and support Ici Santé fundraiser

For the green thumbs of the Valley, finding the best materials and tools to tend to home gardens can be a high priority. While the top fertilizers, seeds, and weeding strategies can be debated at length, it is also critical to recognize the importance of quality water in terms of garden care.

It may be easier to set a timer and let sprinkler systems do the rest, but there are several benefits to maximizing the use of rainwater. When captured before it hits the ground, rainwater is free of the pesticides, pollutants, and chemicals it can often gather when running across streets, sidewalks, and lawns. Rainwater is also a healthier option for plants. It can help reduce the pollution and balance the pH in your plants’ soil, and prevent damage caused by cold water.

Plant lovers can ensure that their gardens have the best, most natural water source by using a rain barrel. Rain barrels enable residents to collect water through the rainy season for use during dry summer months. Water from a rain barrel can be used to wash vehicles or water lawns. Residents can also use the water to clean floors and do laundry, and having a source of stored water can be beneficial if an emergency ever arises.

The Coop Ici Santé has launched a rain barrel sale to raise funds to support of the functioning of the clinic, which has offices in Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague and Howick. The non-profit medical cooperative is partnering with Rainbarrel.ca, an organization that reclaims food-grade barrels and repurposes them as rain barrels.

Locals can keep their gardens healthy and well-nourished by ordering a rain barrel online before June 20 at RainBarrel.ca/coopici. Ici Santé representatives will also be present at the Huntingdon County Farmers Market every Wednesday in June to answer questions.

The rain barrels will be distributed at the Howick municipal garage on June 20 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. or at the farmers’ market. (SR)
