MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent releases first socio-economic portrait

In the words of the great Maya Angelou, “You can’t really know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been.” There is also no denying that the frantic pace of technological advances and a global health crisis have transformed our socio-economic landscape in recent years. With these observations in mind, the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent has produced its first socio-demographic and economic profile.

The document represents a first step in plans to better understand and support local and regional development, with a view to improving the quality of life for citizens while encouraging sustainable prosperity for businesses and local services. The portrait includes details on demographic trends by age, level of education, occupation and sectors of activity, income, housing, mobility, households and families, immigration, and language.

A graphic version of the portrait, including 13 appendices providing a profile of each municipality, is now available to view in French online at mrchsl.com/developpement/fonds-programmes. (SR)

The MRC’s socio-economic portrait reminds me of the Needs Assessment I did locally on contract for the Quebec Community Table, an offshoot of CVESPA, known as CEDEC. My region was Southwest Quebec while regions across the rest of the province were done by other researchers. The data and interviews with various sectors of the population would be interesting to see now, some 20 years later to “know where you’ve been”. That study focussed specifically on the English-speaking linguistic minority. Although the final report homogenized the information and put it into bureaucrat-speak, the raw interviews were informative.
